"I cannot see my family slip into obscurity... Not again."

Raurik was always an interesting one, wanting to understand how magic worked, but not wanting to sit still long enough to learn. He was apprenticed to a local mage, but after getting impatient and wanting to learn about the ancients of the land, he set off to find lost civilizations. Well, he found the last remnants of the giants, hidden and unceremoniously laid to rest in a cave. This made him think hard and long about his place in the gnome race. Then the Dreamquake happened. He was away and his family alone. He went back, desperate to find them, protect them. He couldn't, and his friends and love were among the fallen after the shaking stopped.
His faculties having accustomed to the new tragedies, he went back to the cave and studied the runes etched into the walls. He... connected to them somehow and found himself speaking to the last of the giants on Lyberencia. Not much information was given, but he knew two things:
First, he was given a fraction of the power giants held, and
Second, he was to stop the ancient stones from being gathered by someone already seeking them. He had to go to Heroes Hold.
In his various expeditions searching for artifacts, he found a small woodland turtle he named Conrad, who turned out to be much more apathetic about their relationship than he previously thought. But he found the runestone of rest with an unanticipated group with just the right tools to help him with the discoveries.
After setting out to the Emerald Planes, guided again by the compass, they came across a large manor bearing the symbols of the giants and housing a cathedral dedicated to those entrusted with completing the collection of the runestones. Within the cathedral, in the ground forming a circle around a central pedestaled area, there was a phrase with circular divots and words etched into the stone itself.
"◯, dear ◯. May your ◯ bring imagination to all creatures, and may they find ◯ in your ◯ ◯."
The stone found in Heroes Hold socketed into the first divot, saying "Rest, dear ◯. ...."
Venturing into the Emerald Planes and finding the Runestone Manor felt like his efforts were finally paying off, but he hadn't foreseen it requiring secrecy to quite the level it seemed to need.
Very little else is known of Raurik's history.
